Here's an excerpt from my story,
Working Stiff.
Zachary McCaffrey slung the ladder over his shoulder, hefted
his tool belt and sauntered onto the construction lot, exaggerating his cocky
gait to show the workers he had his shit together. Being boss rocked, but
sometimes the pressure ate at him, bringing sleepless nights to his world and a
helplessness he hid from everyone, especially here at the build site. When he’d
been just another carpenter his weaknesses didn’t matter, but now he had to be
the badass construction foreman, all knowing and capable of solving every
crisis. He had to prove he knew his stuff and could do it better than everyone
else.
A sweet red BMW pulled up out in front of the construction
site and stopped. Great, just what he needed, some desk dork coming down here
to tell him how to do his job. Stupid jerk. He didn’t need a babysitter and the
implication that corporate didn’t trust him hurt. Sure, this was his first big
assignment, coordinating the build for this two hundred unit apartment complex
had him worried, but he sure as hell wouldn’t admit his fear here, not at the
build site.
The door to the red Bimmer opened, revealing long legs clad
in jeans. Zach’s gaze traveled up the slope of those legs, taking in the trim
waist and the nicely muscled pecs underneath a simple white T-shirt. Loving the
shape of this desk dork’s body, he reigned in his libido, willing his cock to
obey. The man stood tall and removed his sunglasses, revealing beautiful green
eyes. Zach swallowed, his throat going dry. Crap, total hottie on-site. But
Zach wouldn’t fall victim to another drama filled dating adventure, and dating
a guy from corporate screamed drama.
Bimmer guy bent into his car, giving Zach a glimpse of the
most gorgeous ass he’d seen in a long while. When the guy stood he had a
construction hat in hand and slid it on before moving toward Zach. At least the
desk dork knew enough to wear a proper lid.
“Can I help you with something?” Zach asked, praying he’d
been wrong about corporate and this dude just happened to be in the wrong
place, but with the construction hat, the guy probably meant to be here. If the
cute desk dork were here by mistake, he’d ask mister gorgeous out.
Bimmer stuck out his hand, reaching for a shake. Zach
dropped his tool belt and grasped hands with the hottie. As their skin touched
an arc of electricity buzzed between them surprising the hell out of Zach. Holy fucking shit! He hadn’t had such a
strong reaction to another guy in ages. Bimmer must have sensed the connection
too because he wrenched his hand free and stepped back, his eyes going to his
hand then to Zach’s.
Zach stared blankly at the desk dork, hoping to cover his
electrifying reaction with a lack of interest. The dude’s gaze flashed to Zach,
leaving him wishing he’d met this guy anywhere but here. Zach had visions of
mountains with fresh streams and taking a tumble with Bimmer in a field of
grass, pushing him to the ground and riding him till he screamed with delight. Fuck, I need to get laid.
“I’m Josh Rand, I’m here for the job.”
The air sucked out of Zach’s lungs. This guy couldn’t be
here for the job. For one, carpenters in Paris Texas, no matter how good they
were, didn’t own nice rides like the car Josh drove. And this guy looked too
good, tanned but not overly so, his skin still appeared soft like he had a desk
job instead of being out in the elements all day. Hell no, this guy wouldn’t
last a week. Fuck, he wasn’t even supposed to be here till next Monday. Then
there was the attraction issue. Zach had already mentally stripped the guy and
fucked him in his fantasies. Hell, if he had to spend any length of time with
this beauty he’d be so screwed.
Why had he agreed to hire this dude? No way he’d survive
working with Josh Rand, but he’d made a promise and he stood by his word. He
sure as hell couldn’t toss the guy to the street, especially not after vowing
to Mike, his sister’s husband, he would hire his cousin who was out of work.
Shit, this was bad and he needed an out. He asked even though he knew the
answer, “You ever work construction before?”
“Yes sir, it’s been a few years, but I know what I’m doing.”
Zach didn’t want this guy here, not on his first big build.
Fuck, Josh had him getting hard just by being near. “Get plenty of guys who say
that.”
Bimmer held up his hand, “I know construction, I know how
hammers work and what a nail is for. It’s a cake walk.” Josh winked and took
the ladder from Zach. “Where you want this stairway to heaven?” Josh’s face
turned pink. “Not that I have a Jacob’s lad--never mind.”
Zach cocked his head to the side, having no idea what Bimmer
was talking about. Images of an overly pierced guy flashed into his mind and
realization struck. Zach let loose a booming laugh, liking this Josh guy more
and more each minute he spent with him. After he recovered he slapped Bimmer on
the back of the shoulder. “Put it over there, we’re working on building six in
the back. My name is Zach, Zach McCaffrey, the foreman for this little site.”
Josh smiled before walking off, careful not to swing the
ladder into Zach. The way the guy moved showed swagger, and what the hell had
Josh really meant by that little Jacob’s ladder comment? Did the dude have
piercings? Was he gay, or did he mean he didn’t do dick? Zach was sure the guy
swung that way, maybe he hadn’t had a man with piercings, or maybe he had
piercings... Oh hell, he needed to stop thinking about how cute Bimmer’s ass
was in jeans and how he’d like to kiss that sassy mouth. Considering how
flippantly he’d made the comment about a Jacob’s ladder, Zach figured Josh
would be a fun date. But fuck him silly, he couldn’t date the men he worked
with, he was the boss.
